Abercrombie Doesn't Change

Is this a good strategy? Only time will tell. In a sense, however, it is a riskier strategy, as short-term earnings are sacrificed in exchange for a future benefit of uncertain magnitude. Same-store sales are down a staggering 30% year over year, as consumer preferences have shifted towards cheaper brands. Despite the large sales drop, inventories are running some 15% above what they were at this time last year, which is undoubtedly contributing to the fact that the company has had to increase its debt load from $43 million one year ago to its current level of $157 million.
There are risks to be aware of, however. If the recession deepens, abercrombie and fitch wholesale cost structure could prove inflexible. While we have seen that evenhealthy retailers have been able to renegotiate their leases lower, the sheer magnitude of ANF's future lease obligations ($2.8 billion, larger than the company's market cap!) cannot be ignored. Nevertheless, the company does have room to reduce prices and increase short-term profits should this happen.
In this retail environment, where consumers selectively scour for bargains, it is tempting for retailers to reduce prices in order to drive sales and reduce inventory. One company bucking this trend is cheap abercrombie outlet (ANF), whose stated number one priority through this downturn is to "protect the brands". By holding prices steady while competitors discount, management hopes cheap Ambercrombie emerges from the recession as a superior brand that consumers are willing to pay a premium for.
But the company appears poised to be able to weather the economic storm. cheap Ruehl No.925 is still profitable despite the huge drop in sales thanks to its massive gross margins: buying apparel items manufactured in Asia and South America and selling them in North America for many times their cost has proven very fruitful for many companies which appeal to the fashion-conscious, and that's not likely to change.

Abercrombie & Fitch store in the San Fra

Days after hitting store shelves, new Abercrombie & Fitch T-shirts featuring caricatured faces with slanted eyes and rice-paddy hats had Asian Americans in the Bay Area and beyond demanding a public apology from the retailer.

The Midwestern clothier, which targets the young, affluent and active, said it was surprised by the mounting controversy over the T-shirt designs.
One has a slogan that says, "Wong Brothers Laundry Service -- Two Wongs Can Make It White." Beside the prominent lettering are two smiling figures in conical hats harking back to 1900s popular-culture depictions of Chinese men."We personally thought Asians would love this T-shirt," said Hampton Carney, with Paul Wilmot Communications in New York, the public relations firm where abercrombie referred a reporter's call.
"I wouldn't know how they could think that," said Austin Chung, 23, of Palo Alto, business manager for the quarterly Asian-focused magazine Monolid. "Abercrombie & Fitch is producing popular culture, and they cater to the views of the majority. You have to ask yourself, who benefits, who gets empowerment, from these kinds of images? It denigrates Asian men."
As word of the new T-shirts in Ruehl No.925 stores spread yesterday among university students and on far-reaching e-mail lists, plans shaped up for a late-night meeting in a Stanford dorm lounge. The subject: What to do about the series of themed T-shirts the retailer -- known for edgy advertising and skin-bearing advertising -- introduced Friday in stores and on its Web site.
"Wok-N-Bowl -- Let the Good Times Roll -- Chinese Food & Bowling," one design reads, with a stereotypical image similar to the figures on the Wong Brothers shirt."Abercrombie and Fitch Buddha Bash -- Get Your Buddha on the Floor," reads another shirt that shares display space in the youth-oriented, casual-clothing store.'TRULY AND DEEPLY SORRY'
The shirts were designed to appeal to young Asian shoppers with a sense of humor, Carney told The Chronicle yesterday.
The shirts were available for sale yesterday in the Abercrombie store at San Francisco Shopping Centre on Market Street. Whether they will remain on the shelves was unclear yesterday, the spokesman said.

Abercrombie & Fitch is a successful company

Today Abercrombie & Fitch is a successful company. Their image has drastically changed throughout the years from a store for outdoorsman to the advertising of naked teenagers. The company also publishes the A&F quarterly, which is not just selling clothes, it is selling a lifestyle.
Abercrombie & Fitch began in 1892 under the name David T. abercrombie and fitch. It was a small waterfront shop and factory in New York City. The founder, David Abercrombie, was a former trapper, prospector, topographer, and railroad surveyor. His love for the great outdoors influenced his store, Abercrombie & Co., and was dedicated to camping, fishing, and hunting gear. His clientele consisted mostly of hunters and explorers. Ezra Fitch, a lawyer in New York crossed paths with abercrombie & Co. in his search for outstanding outdoor gear. In 1900 Abercrombie became Abercrombie & Fitch and Ezra became a partner.
Long arguments formed between the two men regarding the future of Abercrombie & Fitch. Abercrombie wanted to continue selling gear to professional outdoorsmen, while Fitch wanted to focus the store on the general public. abercrombie outlet resigned in 1907 leaving the store in the hands of Ezra Fitch. Fitch wanted the store to have an outdoor feeling. He set up a tent in the middle of the store, and a campfire blazed in a corner. The clerks hired at A&F were not professional salesmen, they were true outdoorsmen. Inventory expanded as did the store. A&F became the first store in New York to supply such clothing to women as well as men. A&F began publishing a magazine which contained 456 pages of outdoor gear and clothing. Now there were 50,000 prospective customers for A&F. Abercrombie & Fitch soon became the largest sporting goods store in the world. Ezra Fitch retired and in 1977, the store went bankrupt. After a few owners, A&F was bought by Limited Inc. in 1988.

established as Abercrombie Co

In 1900, Fitch left his law practice and bought a major share into the growing Abercrombie company and thus joined as co-founder. abercrombie and fitch Co. later moved into larger quarters at 314 Broadway, and Fitch began to implement experimental ideas to renovate the store. In 1904, Fitch's surname was incorporated and so the official name was changed to abercrombie and fitch Co..
Partnership between the founders did not end well. The two men, envisioning different ideas for the future of A&F, quarreled frequently while the company continued to prosper. Fitch wished to expand the company's appeal to the general public, whereas Abercrombie wanted to continue selling professional gear to professional outdoorsmen.
The company was originally established as abercrombie and fitch Co. by David Abercrombie on June 4, 1892, as a small waterfront shop at No.36 South Street in downtown Manhattan, New York. Wealthy New York lawyer Ezra Fitch became one of the store's regular customers.
As a result, abercrombie and fitch sold his share in the company to Fitch in 1907 and returned to manufacturing outdoor goods.Fitch continued the business with other partners and directed the company as he pleased.

a beautifully turned phrase which it&rsquos

A&F has never been a stranger to discrimination suits one was recently settled in the US for discrimination during the hiring process in that they would allegedly only hire &ldquoyoung and beautiful” men and women to work in their stores.Put simply, there are no gallant, selfless or likeable characters in Abercombie&rsquos first standalone novel – yet somehow, you find yourself rooting for many of them.
Joe abercrombie and fitch describes his work as &ldquounheroic fantasy”, a beautifully turned phrase which it&rsquos hard to better if you need to quickly sum up Best Served Cold. The lesson here is that some of these retailers might be better off sticking to their core concepts instead of pushing ever more demographic-specific options out to the consumer.
The basic plot, as the title clearly suggests, is a classic quest for revenge, but it&rsquos in the execution, with a gleeful disregard for the ever-growing body count, and in the flawed characters, that abercrombie and fitch
talent shines.REUHL is just another example long line of concepts rolled out by established chains over the last few years that were either closed or abandoned.
abercrombie and fitch recently announced it will pull the plug on its RUEHL chain, a concept with 29 stores in high-profile malls across the country that targeted well-heeled consumers in their 20s.abercrombie and fitch blamed &ldquothe severe economic downturn” for sinking the stores, which launched in 2004, generating an operating loss of $58 million during the company&rsquos prior fiscal year.

Abercrombie & Fitch Ellen Tote

The company also is examining its underperforming Ruehl chain (which targets an older shopper than the company's namesake and Hollister chains), said Chief Financial Officer Jonathan Ramsden at a Barclays Capital conference Tuesday. "We are looking at everything" for possible cost cuts, Ramsden said. "We (also) need to find a way to make sure that Ruehl doesn't continue to be an open-ended drag on earnings. As we look at where we want to be in the next two or three years, clearly we have to make some not so easy decisions." Outside of the U.S., he said the company can get "significantly accretive international growth."
Seriously, if you're looking for a very chic, do-able, and durable tote, then feast your eyes on this adorable abercrombie and fitch Ellen Tote. "We have been monitoring the situation closely and have a number of new and exciting options for the space that we are exploring," Lunsford said. "As we've demonstrated consistently over the years, store turnover allows us to maintain a fresh, exciting and contemporary retail mix."

The Northpark location was the only abercrombie and fitch store in the Jackson metro area. The store will not be relocating to another location in the area, the employee said.
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) - abercrombie and fitch Co. (ANF 31.50, +0.17, +0.54%) , hurt by its strategy not to discount in-season clothing to cater to ever more budget-conscious shoppers, said it's looking closely at all opportunities to cut costs.

Abercrombie and Fitch Discrimination Scandal

Last week, a tribunal heard that the firm had both unlawfully harassed Riam and dismissed her without good reason. She was awarded £9,000 in damages.
But the size of the payout, she says, is not the issue. ‘The compensation doesn’t even cover my legal fees but I feel a sense of moral victory,’ she insists.
abercrombie and fitch needs to realise that people come in different shapes, colours, sizes and disabilities. Ignorance isn’t an excuse.
‘They have a disturbing sub-culture. I hope they realise that beauty lies in diversity rather than perfection. And if they don’t, I’ve still helped a lot of disabled people realise they shouldn’t take what people say to them.’
Hollyoaks 2010 Calendar: Washboard Abs All in a Row
Riam Dean vs. abercrombie and fitch: Discrimination Scandal
August 18th, 2009 | Abercrombie and Fitch, Fashion Industry Discrimination
We love to blog about models such as those from Abercrombie and Fitch but we don’t like it when fashion industry people discriminate against people who are not cool which is what abercrombie and fitch did in this story.
We give props to Riam Dean for standing up for herself and for other people with disabilities. The Daily Mail reports:
Riam Dean was born with no left forearm. She was working at the Savile Row branch last summer when one of her managers told her to get off the shop floor. She was told that by wearing a cardigan to cover her disability she was violating Abercrombie’s strict ‘Look’ policy.
You go, girl. Congratulations on your victory and may your example serve as an inspiration to others. You are the real model that young (and old) people should emulate.
Interesting tidbit on Abercrombie: Michael Jeffries, the CEO for abercrombie and fitch, is the 10th highest paid CEO in the U.S. He made US$71 million in 2008.

Abercrombie’s collegiate clientele

Perhaps someday, Abercrombie’s collegiate clientele will rediscover higher-brow ways of drawing the mind away from the drudgery of daily life. But until then, shirtless men will frolic on abercrombie and fitch’s soccer field, eyelet-lace wearing girls will stare longingly off camera, and an eager public will lap up the catalog while A&F’s executives smile all the way to the bank.
To buy the A&F catalog, I visited a store filled with 12-year-old girls daring each other to buy short shorts and giggling about the spring break signs saying “Share your towel. Oil your neighbor.
Which begs the question—how does it work?
The critics have a ready answer—a culture-wide race to the bottom, with several “bottoms” thrown in along the way. Sex sells. There’s something to this complaint. Virtue tends to lose to vice, particularly among those who view the vice as compellingly forbidden. Remember her name.” Anonymous spring break flings are one thing for college students to be fantasizing about. They’re another thing entirely for the preteens who flock to A&F stores.
The catalog is certainly part of the constant teenage titillation today’s culture provides, from the booty-shaking videos on MTV’s Total Request Live, to The Thong Song’s lyrics, to movies that sneak by with PG-13 ratings.
But unlike those examples, you do have to be 18 to buy the A&F catalog, and none of the articles in the Spring 2008 issue are more risque than articles in Cosmo or Maxim, which carry no such age restrictions.
Desiring a different world
So beyond the titillation, there’s something else behind abercrombie and fitch’s success—namely, the human need for fantasy. From the daily grind of work or school to the tedium of commutes, bills, and boring families, life can serve up much that begs for escapism.
Not so long ago, this need for escapism came wrapped in high art. Passages of D.H. Lawrence are hotter than anything abercrombie and fitch’s ever cooked up, but no one reads about Lady Chatterley when a more easily understood Carson Daly’s on the tube. Wagner’s searing duets are more passionate and sensual than Sisqo moaning to let him see that thong. But in today’s pre-professional college world, accounting books are shoving aside great literature in pursuit of practicality. Music history is frequently a “gut” class to be slept through, the great works ignored in favor of more accessible tunes on the radio. Sure, you could spend days drifting off with the restless journeys of Jack Keroac. But when hours of economics problem sets, soccer practice, dorm committee meetings, and job interviews are calling, it’s easier just to glance at the A&F quarterly version of the road trip.
So now, mimicking Milton’s image of Adam and Eve discovering each other in the Garden, we have two half-dressed abercrombie and fitch models staring at each other through the leaves. Our escapist art now comes in a clothing catalog, and instead of inspiring the mind to deep thoughts, it inspires the viewer to find his Visa card.

Abercrombie & Fitch Co

Abercrombie & Fitch moves to 2Q loss

NEW YORK — A chastened abercrombie and fitch Co. said Friday it is actively lowering prices and trying to catch up with fashion trends such as dresses as the retailer reported a fiscal second-quarter loss and its third straight quarter of double-digit sales declines.

The preppy teen retailer entered the recession determined to wait it out, maintaining its relatively high prices and investing internationally. But consumers have abandoned Abercrombie for lower-priced options such as Aeropostale Inc. and American Eagle Outfitters Inc.

In response, the company has cut jobs and shuttered its even higher-priced Ruehl chain aimed at 20- and 30-somethings.

CEO Mike Jeffries said the company made a misstep with Ruehl.

“The biggest learning from Ruehl is that as a company, we don’t do ‘mature’ well,” Jeffries said in a conference call with investors.

Jeffries said the company has introduced lower prices and will lower prices even more in coming quarters.

“We continue to be confronted with very challenging conditions during the second quarter,” Jeffries said. “Consumer spending patterns domestically continue to be dictated by cost and value propositions, and this is clearly a headwind for our premium brands.”

In the quarter ended ended Aug. 1, abercrombie and fitch’s loss totaled $26.7 million, or 30 cents per share. That compares with profit of $77.8 million, or 87 cents per share, a year ago.

Quarterly results included $24.4 million in charges for the Ruehl closing and store asset impairment charges. The company would not provide a per-share loss excluding the closure. However, Thomas Weisel Partners analyst Liz Dunn estimated the loss excluding one-time items would be about 8 cents per share.

Analysts forecast a loss of 7 cents per share. Analyst estimates typically exclude one-time items.

Sales dropped 23 percent to $648.5 million, but that topped analyst expectations of $646.5 million.

New Albany, Ohio-based abercrombie and fitch Co., which operates of namesake stores as well as abercrombie, its children’s apparel brand; surf-themed Hollister; and intimate apparel store Gilly Hicks, said sales in stores open at least one year, a key retail metric known as same-store sales, dropped 30 percent. Same-store sales fell 27 percent at namesake stores, 29 percent at abercrombie stores, 33 percent at Hollister and 31 percent at Ruehl.

Known for preppy offerings such as jeans and polo shirts, abercrombie and fitch said it is working to improve its fashion offerings, particulary for women. Dresses and belts have been selling well.

“We are always pushing ourselves … but have admittedly missed some of the fashion opportunities that drove the business in the spring,” Jefferies said.

Prices are also in flux. The company said the average prices will be lower in the third quarter and upcoming quarters than the second quarter.

“We are planning to deliver greater reductions in (average unit retail price) for the fall season, but we’ll continue to review pricing on an ongoing basis,” Jefferies said.

The company slashed marketing, general and administrative costs during the quarter, down 19 percent to $88.7 million from $109 million last year.

The closing of Ruehl, its store focused on handbags and other accessories and aimed at older shoppers, should be complete by the end of the fiscal year.

Jeffries said the company’s Gilly Hicks intimate apparel brand, which was skewing older, will now be aimed at the company’s 20-year-old target market.

“We are young, we’re sexy, we’re controversial at times,” Jeffries said. “That’s what we know how to do, and that’s the business that we own here and are comfortable that we can around the world.”

Abercrombie had “pretty decent results, better than we expected,” said Keybanc Capital Markets analyst Ed Yruma. “They’re getting traction on changes in their promotional strategy, including being more focused on denim and on opening price points.”

The woman, Riam Dean (pictured), had alleged that she was removed from a London branch’s sales floor because the cardigan she wore to cover her missing left forearm violated hollisterstrict dress code. A London employment trial ordered
abercrombie and fitch to pay Dean about $15,000 in compensation for injured feelings, lost earnings and wrongful dismissal.

According to Dean, she was asked by a company employee if it would be possible “to keep you in the stockroom until the winter uniform arrives.” Dean then received letter saying she had been “erroneously placed on the shop floor.”

Abercrombie and Itch

As the above image would suggest, the target market is not really for those who wear many clothes, or indeed, are prepubescent. However, judging by the size of the female sales assistants and the fact my size 6-8 sister snugly wears an abercrombie and fitch M (medium), the waist of an 11 year old is a prerequisite. Unless you are male, in which case I imagine the sizing is similar, as despite a six pack, every polo must be worn nipple-protruding tight. For an early noughties cultural reference, see LFO's 'Summer Girls' video here.

The irony of the seemingly wholesome image abercrombie and fitch
likes to throw out there is that the shop itself is a LIVING HELL HOLE. They've taken a beautiful, rococo ceiling-ed mansion hidden away off Regent Street, painted the entire interior black, pumped it full of seriously cheesy yet unrecognisable dance music and A&F scent and waited for the hoards of people with more money than sense to flock on in.

I nearly asphyxiated upon entry. Initially I was gagged by the choking scent of 'youth' - intriguingly not cigarettes, cider, 'So Kiss Me' body spray and the hamster smell of teenage boy, but something with far more patchouli - then matters were made worse by a flabbergasted reaction to the naked, hairless bodybuilder in the doorway, with whom I'm supposed to want a Polaroid photograph taken; the final nail in the coffin being my uncontrollable laughter at the sales assistants who are made to dance on a balcony, just, you know, 'cos it's so fly in there.

Once I'd regained the ability to respire, I was able to reflect on the most awkward dancing I've seen outside of school discos. Not that it was inexplicable - the music was the type that's only played in bad Majorcan cocktail bars, the 'dancers' were presumably sober, and wearing plaid. You can't dance to cheese in plaid. Especially not on a balcony, for no apparent reason, when you are, by contract, a sales assistant.
As shopping goes, I'm pretty tolerant of stressful situations. I can tackle a stinky charity shop without shame, delve into dubious boxes at car boot sale with delight, and even rummage through sale rails with relish. Arguably, working in a vintage shop prepares you pretty well for most gross selling situations, but even so, I'm no retail wuss.

Or so I thought. abercrombie and fitch, for the blissfully unaware, is a hugely overpriced preppy American brand which exploits rich parents of demanding prepubescents by selling 70 different colours of four identical garments: the hoodie, the polo, the vest, and the jogger. Every now and then they might go a little crazy and chuck a skinny jean in there, or, as my recent visit demonstrated, a plaid shirt, but essentially that is what they create.

After being led around the labyrinthine set-up of rooms and corridors, all the while being constantly greeted by smugly attractive identikit teenagers, the dancing made a little sense. It was, after all, strongly reminiscent of a Berlin club, minus the graffiti, what with the constant shoving and pushing of shoppers eager to get their hands on overpriced jersey.

Upon discovering that every dingy room was essentially full of the same thing, failing to find a changing room and then establishing that a lot more could be done with fifty quid than buy a polo shirt, I was happy to leave the most stressful shopping experience I've ever encountered and take a big breath of polluted central London air. It tasted a damn sight more realistic.abercrombie and fitch

Abercrombie & Fitch’s Attending Policy

Disabled student wins employment tribunal against Abercrombie and Fitch

US clothing retailer told girl she did not meet ‘look policy’
17 August 2009
An employment tribunal has told clothes retailer abercrombie and fitch(A&F) to pay a disabled worker more than £9,000 for wrongful dismissal.
Law student Riam Dean, who worked at the US retailer’s London store in 2007, claimed she was asked to move from working on the shopfloor to the stockroom because she did not fit the firm’s image.
Dean was born without her left forearm and told A&F about her disability after getting the job. She said the company agreed she could wear a cardigan to cover the link between her prosthesis and her upper arm.
But once on the shopfloor she was told that she had to take off the cardigan because it broke the firm's "look policy". A&F’s head office then suggested she worked in the stockroom "until the winter uniform arrives”, she told the court.
The tribunal made the compensation award for injury to her feelings, loss of earnings and harassment.
Dean’s solicitor said: “It is all very well having glossy staff handbooks dealing with discrimination procedures – but you must actually apply them."
abercrombie and fitch said the findings of the tribunal were based "on the events of a single day" and that these "were not at all representative of Dean's overall employment with A&F".
